Kimora's "I LOVE CANDY" Birthday Party

As an event designer I love conceptualizing ideas when it comes to kids birthday parties. This year for my daughter's 6th birthday we wanted to do something fun and colorful. I'm a long time fan of Gapkids and when I saw the I WANT CANDY collection, I absolutely fell in love with the color palette, sequins, ruffles and tulle used in the line. We were so inspired that we designed the entire party concept around the collection. And of course it gave me and Kimora a reason to shop as well:)

Life is a Gift :: Modern Baby Shower

Happy Tuesday, today we are featuring a modern baby shower we designed this past Fall. The event design was featured on Hostess with the Mostess earlier this year.

My client was a designer’s dream… she gave us complete creative freedom for the entire event design! We started by searching for a unique color palette and bounced around many ideas before I saw this gorgeous nursery design. I was so inspired by the aesthetics of the room – from the color palette to the patterns and textures used.

The theme of the shower was “Life Is a Gift”. The couple was expecting their first girl and we wanted the event to feel sophisticated, yet fun. The idea was to have the entire design focus around gifts. I designed three patterns using the event color palette and repeated it throughout the event on the custom wrapping paper, napkin wraps, favor labels and the invitation.

We played up the sweet "Life is a Gift” theme of this celebration by creating chic party decor from boxes dressed up to look like {very stylish!} gifts. The custom-designed wrapping papers and stationery elements, can be purchased through our online store.

We also came up with the idea of incorporating the baby shower games into the placemat design… the guests loved this little detail!

Dooby Design Group is currently searching for enthusiastic interns to begin working immediately on a special project. The internships are unpaid and ideal candidates are available to work in our studio at least three afternoons a week, Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays although we’re flexible and will work with you and your schedule. Internships begin mid-March through July; but have the potential to become part-time paid positions.

We’re a small staff, and our interns function as integral members of the editorial and design team, so be prepared to be very hands on. If you have a passion for event design, fashion and lifestyle photography, we have the following positions available:

Editorial Internship

The editorial internship responsibilities include assisting with photo shoot production duties such as: researching and calling in sample merchandise, hands-on work at photo shoots, photo shoot-related office correspondence, and other administrative tasks. Interns will be called upon to participate in the creation of stories, be included in department meetings and strategy sessions, and be exposed to a valuable learning experience.

Photo/Fashion Internship

Photo interns assist the Photography Director, Photo Editor, and Photo Assistant in tasks ranging from prop styling to photo shoot production to photo research. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, responsible, and reliable with an interest in fashion, a great work ethic and positive attitude. Interns will participate in a variety of projects, which may include:

• Cataloging and trafficking designer samples
• Helping editors with special projects
• Assisting with photo shoots

Eligible candidates must have some knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and the Microsoft Office Suite is a plus.

Art Internship

The right candidate will hold many of the same responsibilities as a full-time staff member, including conceptualizing art for stories, collaborating with the editorial and photo staff and designing smart, attractive layouts. The intern will also have the opportunity to help style and prop in-house photo shoots, allowing he/she to follow his/her vision from concept to completion. Other daily duties include updating the mock-up wall, scanning, copying, and running errands.

The candidate should be proficient in InDesign, and Photoshop. Illustrator skills are a plus. This is a great opportunity to gain exposure to all aspects of design industry including research, art layout, editing and deadlines.

Baby Wears Prada Inspired Baby Shower :: The Board

Tomorrow we are executing the design concept we've been working on for the past four months. It is the "Baby Wears Prada" inspired baby shower taking place in downtown Detroit. We have had such a pleasure working with DeJuan and Karen over the past two years, from their bridal shower, wedding and now Baby Lever debuting.

Here is the design board that we created for their baby shower concept. We hope to share photos with our readers over the next few weeks of the completed design.

Winnie the Pooh Inspired Sweets Table :: The Board

About a week ago today we were contacted to design a sweets table for a 1st birthday party inspired by Winnie the Pooh. The birthday was to take place at the Novi Civic Center in Michigan for 60 of their closest family and friends. This is the design board we came up with for the Winnie the Pooh sweets table concept.

Sweet message from birthday boy's mom:
"Thank you so much for the wonderful candy table you have done for Ishaan's birthday. We truly loved the colors as well as the set up. It was perfect. Most importantly, I loved the caramel popcorn. Great work Aisha!!!!!!!!!! Thanks a ton!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Real Michigan Wedding:: Rachael & Scott (1 of 3)

Rachael and Scott were such an amazing couple to work with.

Rachael contacted me back in early 2010 after seeing our design on Style Me Pretty. She loved the modern but unexpected design elements we created. Rachael a fashionista, has great design aesthetic in her own right. She designed all her reception stationery and her mom created all the custom pillows for the lounge area.

The wedding ceremony took place under a gorgeous white tent outside the Ocean Prime restaurant in Troy, Michigan. The cocktail hour was at the Ocean Prime in their outside lounge area, gorgeous atmosphere, heated lamps that gave off a gorgeous warm amber light, really set the tone for the evening. The reception took place inside the modern yet chic restaurant. Their guests dined on Lobster tail and Filet Mignon and was treated to a lavish array of desserts selected by the bride and groom.

Scott and Rachael were one of the most down to earth and fun couples we've had the chance to work with. We wish them many years of happiness and success!!

Ksenija Savic captured the day so beautifully, her and her assistant were a pleasure to work with:)

Karen & DeJuan :: A celebration of love

We are in the home stretch of finalizing the "Baby Wears Prada" baby shower design for one of our all time favorite couples DeJuan & Karen. The baby shower is taking place next weekend and we can't wait to see it all come together. We had the pleasure of designing the "CoCo Chanel" inspired Michigan bridal shower here and here for Karen last March at the Royal Park Hotel in Birmingham.

Bat Mitzvah :: Dessert table

We created this dessert table this past Sunday for The Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Ann Arbor. Designing this table was so much fun. We had the pleasure of collaborating with Sweet Heather Anne once again; she designed the gorgeous custom cake as well as the specialty baked goods. It's always great working with Heather, she translates our design concepts to fabulous works of art.

My favorite aspect is the color palette and mix of patterns.

Orange and Purple :: Dessert Table

After a weekend of cutting, sewing, steaming and assembling eighty fabric diapers for an upcoming baby shower were working on, I decided to feed my sweet tooth with this lovely dessert table design.

Last Spring we designed this table in our Ypsilanti studio for prospective clients to nibble and enjoy during their visit. Orange and purple is a lovely unexpected color palette for any event.

Happy New year to all my lovelies. We are working on some incredible events this year. The first is a gorgeous baby shower design next month in downtown Detroit chuck full of lovely details for a past client and we are super excited. This week I'm going to feature some of my favorite modern nursery designs. I've drawn a lot of inspiration from these awesome rooms. We also have a couple of baby showers we designed last year that we'll be featuring also.

Below, is a wonderful girls nursery. I love the way the designer used a mix of patterns on the walls as well as the throw pillows. The color palette is unique and not your typical girls nursery color.

Modern Baby Shower :: Navy and Orange

We created a very modern design with a non-traditional color palette for this baby shower. The lounge area in the center was meant to serve as a focal point, as well provide a comfortable space for the mom to be to sit and relax. We then decided to go with long tables to create a family style dining experience. We designed the paper goods using navy blue with a pop of orange, which included invitations, thank you favor labels, napkin rings, food signage and BABY BOY signage to tie the overall look together.

Gearing up for the Holiday Season

Rehearsal Dinner - New York {Black & White}

While in New York a few weeks ago for a birthday party, Derrick and Anika approached us to design their upcoming Rehearsal dinner. Derrick the groom was pretty hands on with the entire wedding planning and wanted the dinner to feel classic and elegant for his 40 guests. We went to work immediately to come up with a color palette and design for the event that would take place the following weekend. The event was hosted at the couples private venue they own and catered by a local catering company. The event turned out amazing and the couple and their guests were extremely happy. Unfortunately, we were unable to contract a professional event photographer, so please see photos below that I captured myself.

We had a blast planning and designing all the little details for this sweet birthday party for two adorable little angels!! The oldest was turning 2 and the youngest turning one, they love Hello Kitty and Dora so we decided to create a color palette based off the two characters. While planning for a kid's party we always try to create a space that would be functional for children. So we (my sister, lol)found these cool all white picnic tables at Target on clearance and decided to make that the focal point "the head table" so to say. We then designed all the paper goodies, placemats that served dual purpose with coloring sheets on the back, paper napkin rings, lunch bags with all type of little yummies, thank you tags and we top it off with a lovely sweets table. I called on Sweet Heather Anne to create and design, cookies that resembled tutus and miniature cakes for our miniature guests. Everything turned out fabulous and we look forward to our next event in NYC.

Turquoise and Teal :: Gorgeous Sweets Table

I was very inspired by the bold unique color palette in which we used for this inspiration shoot. I decided to use a baroque damask pattern as the main graphic element for the stationery and I carried this through to the sweets table design. We chose to use all different shades of turquoise sweets with slate gray as an accent. Sweet Heather Anne designed a cake as the focal point for the sweets table, inspired by the Katerina Bocci ballgown the bride wore and she hand painted the baroque pattern that I created for the stationery on one of the layers of the cake. All the stationery elements were die-cut into gorgeous ornate shapes by Sugar Paper, a great Etsy find. Overall we were very pleased with the way the patterns, colors and textures translated onto the sweets table as well as the stationery.

Real Event :: Coco Chanel Inspired Bridal Shower :: Part II, The Details

Today, we're featuring all the styling details that were created to convey the CoCo Chanel inspired bridal shower. Our first thought was think black and white, texture, ribbon and lots of pearls. So we started by gathering black accents because we knew it would be stunning on a ivory/white base; acrylic black chargers, black vases, black candle stick holders (these were amazing) and black picture frames. We wanted to incorporate pearls so we decided to use very large pearl balls and place them as a piece of art on the lovely black candle holders. We also accented the ivory napkins by tying black satin ribbon and draping strands of pearls; the blush pink candles and white hydrangeas were used to add a bit of softness. When creating the paper elements we incorporated the classic Chanel quilting as the main graphic element. We also used black cake stands and accented with pink and ivory sweets for the Dessert Table. Here is the inspiration board I created back in March:

We had a great time styling this Coco Chanel inspired bridal shower. When Anna (Lucia Paul Design) presented the design concept to us, we immediately new we wanted to convey a classic, sophisticated and elegant style through the decor details. We achieved this by using essential Chanel elements such as pearls, black and white, ribbon and signature Chanel quilting. We followed this very polished look throughout all aspects of the event decor; stationery, napkin details, place settings, floral design, table decor and the fabulous dessert table.

Until next week...Image: One of 12 individually styled suites at the revamped May Fair Hotel,the Schiaparelli Suite takes its name from the fuchsia-loving, avant-garde Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli. This vast suite may be fairly restrained in its homage to the designer, but its combination of colour and comfort is a winning one, with pink pony-skin and leather fittings, fuchsia pillows and a hot pink retro-styled armchair.

This weekend we had the pleasure of designing a sweets table for Kristi & Adam. The wedding reception was at The Inn at St.John's in the beautiful Atrium. The bride really has a big sweet tooth and also loves popcorn. So we incorporated gourmet popcorn in different flavors into the design. Check out all the lovely details.

Design Inspiration :: Baby Shower

We're working on a design for an August baby shower. I have two concepts and color palettes in mind. Which one is your favorite??

The first concept would include shades of blue that incorporate a stripe and paisley pattern. I may use brown folding chairs as an accent for the overall look.

We've been having such an amazing time designing events this year thus far; but my favorite has to be designing dessert/sweets tables. My clients have been really good at letting us coming up with amazing designs that wow them. In the spring I created a few dessert tables for a photo shoot and wanted to share one of them.

In my search for a color palette for the dessert table below, I came across so much eye candy.

Real Wedding :: May 15, 2010 {Josh & Samantha}

Happy Friday everyone!! Today we bring you our first full event design wedding of the 2010 wedding season. Samantha and Josh were married on Saturday, May 15 in Belleville, Michigan. Earlier this month we featured a sneak peak of their table design. It was a pleasure designing and working with Samantha and her mom Pam over this past year. Congratulations!!

For the personal flowers we chose red mokara orchids for the groom's boutonniere and gorgeous pink peonies for brides bouquet wrapped with her grandmother's scarf. The bridesmaid bouquets were all white flowers with red wraps.

The centerpieces were a mix of 8ft tall curly willow branches in black vases with hanging crystal and red alstromeria, black vases with textured red roses and floating candles with red mokara orchids.

Invitation, menu cards, escort cards and table numbers. Color palette, turquoise and red.

{Sweets Table} Coral, Gray, Black and White

This weekend we had the pleasure of designing Tiffany and Sconey wedding. I met with Tiffany about a year ago to discuss the design for their big day. She had a color palette in mind but wanted us to create a room that felt warm and elegant. We'll be posting photos in a few weeks of the entire event, but here is a sneak peak of the sweets table.

I started by creating a graphic that would feel soft and I could carry through to all their paper elements. When creating this sweets table, we designed favor bag labels, sweets id tags, custom mini candy wraps and a table sign. I really love how all the colors worked together.
